Robert Knox, observed that many women in ancient Sri Lanka at least owned one piece of exquisitely made gold or silver jewellery adorned with a precious stone. In the past Jewellery was also worn by men and varying designs were made to adorn nearly every part of the body.

The Jewellery Industry and the gem industry of Sri Lanka have always evolved together and have complimented each other. During the ancient times Silver and copper was used more frequently to prepare Jewellery and gold was reserved for the royalty.
