Galle | Udawalawe | Colombo

Arrive and Transfer to Galle

On arrival in Colombo you will be met by your guide. You will be directly taken to Galle and spend the rest of the day at this picturesque UNESCO World Heritage Site exploring the atmospheric fort. The colonial architecture here is incredibly well-preserved with the city gates and ramparts, 18th century Dutch Reformed Church, Arab Quarter and pretty old post office particular highlights. Enjoy the beautiful sunset and some delicious seafood for dinner at one of the cozy restaurants inside the fort.

Safari at the Udawalawe National Park

After breakfast travel to Udawalawe. Udawalawe National Park is a large reserve made up of 119 square miles of grassland, scrub jungle and riverine forest. The main attraction of the park is the large concentration of Asian elephants found here, Udawalawe is home to over 400 of these gentle giants and it is almost guaranteed to see them whilst on safari. Have lunch in Udawalawe and pay a visit to a sugar cane plantation and taste sugar cane. In the evening explore Udawalawe on safari jeep accompanied by a naturalist. Mainly open parkland, the park is famous for its elephants which can be seen in herds of over one hundred. Udawalawe is also home to spotted deer, sambar, barking deer, wild boar, water buffalo and jackal whilst the birding is excellent with nearly 200 species recorded.

Udawalawe to Colombo (via the city of Gems)

Visit the Elephant Transit Home in the morning which has helped care for dozens of injured, sick, or orphaned baby elephants from all over Sri Lanka and engage in a feeding session. Leave to Colombo via Ratnapura known as the city of gems in Sri Lanka. Pay a visit to a gem pit to experience the gem mining in the country and visit a gem shop to witness the array of gems from Sri Lanka. Reach Colombo in the evening, the Sri Lankan capital began as a Portuguese trading outpost. Over the centuries the city developed under both the Dutch and British to become Sri Lanka’s main commercial hub and today is home to numerous colonial buildings and bazaars. End your adventurous weekend enjoying some delicious Sri Lankan Crabs at a restaurant in Colombo. Based on your flight schedule you could opt to leave in the night or stay an extra night and travel back the next morning.
